Portraits-Good Crop/Bad Crop
READ Article: Good Crop / Bad Crop-How to best crop portraits
I always crop a shot below the knee, mid-thigh, at the waist, across forearm, or through the top of head. If I’m going to crop through my model’s waist I will usually ask my model to bring their arms up so I don’t have to crop through their arms.
I avoid cropping at any of the joints of the body. This includes fingers, toes, elbows, knees and wrists. I also think cropping through the model’s chin looks odd.

HUMANS OF ISB
Humans of New York
We will look at the work of Brandon Stanton, the photographer behind Humans of NY. His facebook page eventually landed him a book deal and now he travels around the world, interviewing strangers on the street all over the place and has become a UN representative to give people in conflict areas a voice.
We will learn:
-what type of questions he asks
-how he approaches strangers
-how he gets them to open up to him
-what portrait techniques we see him use in his photos of strangers
Each of you will snap a collection of photos here at school and outside the school campus.
In groups of 1-2, go out and talk to people around school. It is an advantage to speak Chinese, or you may pair up with another student who can speak Chinese.
Students cannot leave school grounds but may go outside the building and talk to the guards, Dome staff, grounds keepers etc.
After your photoshoot around school, copy your photos into iphoto on your personal laptops.

Photos should be edited before Blog upload (straightened, cropped, exposure, contrast)
-Edit, upload best 5 photos onto personal ISB Blog page.
-5 photo posts should include the answer from the person photographed and the person’s role/title (ex. Student, teacher, security guard, janitor, food server, secretary etc) Obviously, if someone wants to keep their identity secret, that is okay and ultimately up to them.
A student last year enjoyed this project so much, they are continuously updating their own tumblr for Humans of Shunyi
